Director Notes 08.18.18

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.  This email is going to students in the marching band and their parents.  I first want to let everyone know how proud I am of all the work the kids did this past week ( and two weeks for guard and percussion ).  We are off to a strong start and it is because of the great work ethic shown by all the kids.  My sincere appreciation also goes out to our booster board – Chuck Davis, Kathy Sharman, Mark Catapano, Heather Lehneis, and Amy Kissel, for their hard work over the summer to help get our year off and running.  Additional thanks to Mary Pissocra for her work in helping get the kids sized for uniforms.   And my apologies to anyone else I may have overlooked helping out this past week.

Thank you to everyone who has already turned in all forms and fees for various things… to include the marching fee of $325, and orders for shoes/gloves/pants/pool party.  Seniors were also given information about senior warm ups (optional purchase) and everyone was given an order form for polos and fleece tops (optional).  If for some reason orders were not turned in last week, please send in on Monday so we can get those items ordered this coming week.
Here are some reminders about this coming week:

MONDAY 8/20 – Rehearsal 5pm-8:30pm   *Don’t forget sunscreen and water jug

TUESDAY 8/21 – Rehearsal 5pm-8:30pm

WEDNESDAY 8/22 – Freshman Orientation performance (arrive by 7:20am, should be done by 8:30am).  Freshman will play for the beginning of the event and can then join their appropriate group to finish the orientation.   WEAR KHAKI SHORTS AND SUN VALLEY COLORS.   Our 2018 band shirt is scheduled to be delivered by Wednesday, but probably not in time for us to wear to orientation. An order form for additional show shirts and hoodies will be sent out soon as well.

THURSDAY 8/23 – Rehearsal 5pm – 8:30pm   **THIS IS OUR PARENT PREVIEW NIGHT.  Students will rehearse 5pm-7pm.  Exhibition will begin at 7pm and last about 20-25 minutes.   Our Pool party will be at the Brandon Oaks Clubhouse Pool (by the lake on Brandon Oaks Parkway) and is 8pm-10pm.  The $5 charge is to cover the cost of lifeguards, which are required.   We hope all the kids and many of the parents will take time to attend and enjoy some time together before the start of the school year.

FRIDAY 8/24 – 1st Home Football Game.   Student report time is 5:30pm.  HOT WEATHER UNIFORM (Khaki shorts, band shirt *plans are to pass this out at Thursday practice, if not before).   If you are coming to the game please be prepared to pay the admission cost.  $7 or $8, not sure of exact cost.  Cash only, I think.   Students and volunteers who have signed up (VOLUNTEERS CAN SIGN UP BY CLICKING HERE) are free of course.  We are limited to a certain number of volunteers, so please contact our board member SKSHARMAN4@MSN.COM if you have questions about volunteering.   Students usually arrive at the field around 7:15pm for pre-game. We will play in the stands during the first and second quarter, move to the field for a short warmup prior to halftime, then have some time off during the 3rd quarter before returning to play in the stands during the 4th quarter.  3rdquarter is when students are permitted to get food and drink at the concession stand. Otherwise, students may only have water in the stands during the game.  Most games get done around 9:45-10:00pm.  We will move back to the band room immediately after the game to pack up and get dismissed.  Students will not be permitted to leave until all equipment is put away, room is cleaned, and final announcements are given.  Please understand that all students will be dismissed at the same time. Please don’t ask to leave early. 

SATURDAY 8/25 – Car Wash at State Employees Credit Union. This is a new location for us.  Car Washes are a great fundraiser for us and also provides some great camaraderie for the kids and parents here at the start of the season.  Students are expected to attend unless they have a major conflict.  Parent help is needed as well.  [CLICK HERE FOR SIGN UP]    Be sure to wear Band/School attire, have sunscreen, and wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a jug of water.  Please also take a minute or two to let your family and friends know about our car wash.  It’s never too early to start letting people know. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter can be great ways to communicate out about our events.

Looking ahead to the first week of school….
Begin Monday Guard sectionals and Tuesday/Thursday full group rehearsals begin.

WEDNESDAY 8/29 -  MOD PIZZA Give Back Night!  Reminder FLYER will go home.  MUST SHOW THE FLYER AT CHECKOUT so we can get a percentage donated back to us.  This is another easy fundraiser… come out and eat and let others know to come out as well!

FRIDAY 8/31 – No Game… enjoy a rare Friday night off in the Fall!

SATURDAY 9/1 - MATTHEWS ALIVE PARADE.  A separate email and paper handout will be send home next week with additional details for that parade, but in short, students will need to their own transportation to and from the event, which will be downtown Matthews (drop off near the Harris Teeter corporate office on Crestdale Lane off Matthews-Mint Hill Rd,  End of parade is at Matthews United Methodist Church.)  Students will wear their hot weather uniform for that also (Khaki shorts and band shirt).  Meet time is 8:30am, parade starts at 10:30am and we are usually done between 11:30am-noon. Many families choose to remain downtown for the festivities.  Visit www.MatthewsAlive.org for info about the event.

COMMENT ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL BAND SCHEDULE – I know schedules were sent out this past week.  There are two mixed band classes this coming year.  First period will be a mix of 9th and 10th grade students, and 2nd period will be 11th and 12th and supplemented with some 10th graders.  This was done to balance out instrumentation.  Specific course numbers/names may not be correct for all students.  I have to look at that closer and see if any adjustments need to be made.  If for some reason band is supposed to be on your schedule and it is not please let me know so I can work to ensure you get that corrected.  PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANY STUDENT PUTS IN A CHANGE REQUEST THROUGH THE GOOGLE FORM THAT INCLUDES AN ALTERATION TO YOUR BAND SCHEDULE.  I just want to make sure that I understand any changes you are requesting and if it affects your band schedule.
