Thanks for your interest in our winterguard program.  The training and tryouts are designed to provide instruction to new potential members, review technique for veteran members, and select the squad that will represent Sun Valley in the CWEA (Carolina Winter Ensemble Association) competition circuit.  NO PREVIOUS TRAINING IS NEEDED.  This group does compete, so auditions are needed to determine trainability and commitment.  We are looking to add new members every year, so be prepared to soak up whatever you can during the training sessions, and ASK FOR HELP if you are unsure.  Both the instructor and veteran members are here to help!    Students who are not selected for Winterguard are highly encouraged to return for our marching band colorguard tryouts in the spring.

Oct. 30 / Nov. 1,       Nov. 5, 6, 7, 8     5pm-7:30pm
SVHS Band Room (located beside main student parking lot)

The season runs November thru March.  Rehearsals are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays (5pm-8pm), and Saturdays (to be determined, plan for most of the day).  Contests are on Saturdays and can be full day events, depending on the individual performance and awards times.
NEW THIS YEAR >>> Students will be required to provide their own transportation to all contests, with the exception of one of the contests, which is about 2 hours away.  We will provide a bus to that event.
***Students must be able to commit to weekly rehearsal and competitions as scheduled.

If selected for the squad, there is a participation fee of $400.  This can be paid all at once or in installments.  If selected for the squad, the first payment will be due Monday, November 19th.  Fees help cover instruction, costume, equipment use, and contest registration fees.  The participation fee will also help cover the cost of transportation to one (1) contest, which is about a 2 hour drive.  All other contest locations are within 45 minutes to an hour drive. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to all other contests.  Exact location and times for each event will be shared out closer to the event.   Additional expenses, beyond the $400 fee might include footwear, team shirt, or gloves as determined by the instructor.  To put this in perspective, students will be receiving close to 20 hours of dance and choreography instruction each week once the full season is in swing.  This is much less expensive than dance instruction once per week at a local studio.

COLORGUARD  is the visual ensemble that performs in conjunction with the instrumental players of the marching band.  A “corps style” field show is incomplete without this versatile unit.  The guard members enhance the overall performance through the use of color, equipment, and physical movement.  Colorguard is a totally extra-curricular group.  Students are selected through an audition process during the spring semester.  The colorguard is sponsored by Mr. Reynolds through the band program, but brings in additional instructors who specialize in guard work.  These instructors are contracted through our booster association and are responsible for the choreography and instruction.

WINTERGUARD  is an extra-curricular activity that takes all the characteristics from the colorguard, minus the marching band and football field!  This group is selected through an audition process in late Fall and meets regularly outside of the school day.  Rehearsals are typically Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, with some Saturday practices as well. Our winterguard participates in the CWEA (Carolina Winter Ensemble Association) circuit.  This is a highly competitive group, with competitions held on Saturdays throughout the season.
